Giraffes and doilies

Monday... worn to meet my new summer school kids then hang out with my special needs buddy. Later Nate came over and we went for a midnight swim in my pool (ok, actually it was only 10:30pm)

Weddings are my life

Friday night Nate and I hung out with a few friends. Our friends, Mel and Jake, are getting married this Saturday so we hung out with Mel for her final weekend "of freedom." It's a stupid expression, I know.

Speaking of stupid expressions, we apparently enjoy making stupid faces in all our photos... or at least I do.

Then on Saturday night, another wedding for the photo booth... this one was fun because I ran into one of my favorite members from the golf club where I worked for nine years! He's in his 80s and I didn't think I'd ever see him again! He immediately recognized me and came over to talk to me and gave me a hug. His family didn't know he already knew me and was watching him talk to me. They came over later and were like, "We were watching grandpa and thought, 'Wow, he's really chatting up the photo booth girl!'  and then he hugged you and we were like, 'Wow, now he's getting handsy with the photo booth girl.'" It was really neat to see him again!

I also made some pickles because the garden is full of waaaaaaaaay too many cucumbers...

And a bunch of the tiny tomatoes are finally getting ripe...

Otherwise, I spent most of the weekend balls-deep in the Olympics. I get mildly obsessed with them every time.

Dip dye

Today was the final day of the first session of summer school. The kids and I ground wheat into flour with a wheat mill. Then we used the flour to make our own homemade pasta. We had the sauce made from our farmer's market veggies yesterday. We also had a salad made of lettuce we grew ourselves. It was sad saying goodbye to them even though the class was only 3 weeks long!

A couple weeks ago I found a Target brand empire-waist maternity dress that was way too big for me and well, I'm not pregnant. But it was $1 at the thrift store, which is a good deal just for the fabric! So I turned it into this skirt (which took all of 15 mins)!

Last night Nate and I went to Broadway Pizza (which was my favorite pizza to begin with) and now they have the best topping on Earth... jalapeno bacon. Wrap your mind around that. So delicious. Then we went to see the River Rats waterski show. It's free every Thursday night at 7pm and right across the street from the pizza place (the NE location on Broadway).

The idea of waterskiing in the Mississippi River is pretty unappealing to me, but my friend Meghan has been in the show for years and they always look like they're having so much fun!

Couch print pants

Today... worn to take my summer school kids to the farmer's market again. Tomorrow is the last day of this session and we're making fresh pasta sauce to eat tomorrow. A homeless guy approached me when I was with the kids and said, "Hey! I know you! Your last name is Flintstone, right?" I said no and he said, "You aren't Pebbles? You look just like her!" The kids thought this was the funniest thing on Earth, which was cute. Hmm, I have been compared to Wilma Flintstone before... people feel the need to tell me all the time that I look like someone famous, which I don't think is true. I've heard Amy Adams (um, just cause she sometimes dyes her hair red, doesn't mean I look like her), Carol Burnett (I don't look like her, but I do love her), Scarlett Johanson (I think that's more because my deep, raspy voice is similar to hers - though my voice is mostly compared to Kathleen Turner), Bernadette Peters (very flattering as she is insanely gorgeous), Jenny Lewis (ok, mayyyybe) and some girl from American Horror Story who some drunk girls at a wedding couldn't stop talking about but also couldn't remember her name. Sorry, but no, I just look like me and I'm okay with that.

I found these girl's size 16 Lands End pants at a thrift store. They were too big, floor length, and flares. A few snips and seams later, and I've got my very own one of a kind cropped couch-print pants for $3!

Last night Nate and I went to see Moonrise Kingdom. He's had a gift card to a movie theater from his boss forever and we were waiting until there was something we actually wanted to see. It was super cute and visually stunning (duh, it's Wes Anderson.) It also made me wanna dig out my vintage boy scout shirts (and hopefully I can once it stops being 95 degrees and insanely humid.)

In the dell

We took the summer school kids to a local produce farm today... I wasn't sure what to wear. It stormed and poured all night long, so we knew the farm was going to be muddy. But it was also supposed to be 90 degrees and humid today, but with more scattered rain showers. I'm not real big on hats, but I figured a hot/rainy day at a farm required some sort of head covering. Sooooooo, I went with this and brought a rain coat and it was perfect! We all got a bit muddy but it was fun!

Huge plaster animals

Saturday... worked another wedding for the photo booth, where I got recognized by a reader in a cute scalloped dress (hi Stacy!), and I never know what to say when it happens!

Sunday Nate and I went to Gooney Golf. Confession: I LOVE mini-golf courses, the cheesier the better. This one was AWESOME. Huge random animals, lots of moving parts where you had to get the timing just right. Amazing, even though it was a billion degrees and way too sunny.

We'll all be brave

Today... worn to teach summer school and be really proud that all the kids tried Tamarind and Lychees today (well except the two students who are observing Ramadan who brought them home to try later tonight)! I was a really picky eater as a kid so I think it's awesome that they are willing to try so many new and foreign things!

Today... worn to walk my summer school kids to a farmer's market, which was quite an adventure. We were there to see how many different fruits, veggies, nuts, and spices we could identify that required pollination. The kids did great but they also choked and coughed at all the smokers about how gross it is (awesome!), told a homeless man that "there are way more and sadder homeless people in India, where I'm from," and laughed their asses off when a farmer called me "Red." All in all, it was a good day though. We bought some local honey and fruits to add to plain yogurt and granola to make a "Pollination Parfait."

Kale and bears

Monday... worn to teach summer school, run errands with my special needs buddy (his favorite thing to do, really), pick my mom up from the Greyhound station and take her to my sister's place, and feed my nephew Henrik some pureed veggies for dinner (adorable, hilarious, and messy!)

Saturday during the day, I unloaded two moving pods that belong to my friends Megan and John... Nate helped and it took us about 3 hours in 95 degree weather. It was exhausting but I'm glad we got it done, and without killing each other.

Pickled

Worn to make homemade pickles with my summer school kids! And to hang out with a locksmith and some moving pods. My best friend Megan is moving back from San Fransisco (yay!) but she and her husband are in Asia for a month (boo!) so I have to help with all the moving stufffff. It's a lot of work! But I'm expecting a pimp gift from their trip! Plus I love them, so I'll do whatever they ask!

Seeing spots

Worn to take 19 third graders on a city bus to a local co-op for our field trip today... I naively thought it would be "fun," but I was wrong. Dead wrong. Ok, no one died... except my spirit. I kid, I kid. It was stressful, but still fun.

Aaaand what's new in my etsy world... finally got my Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox shirts done for both men and women... yay! Paul is on the front and Babe is on the back!

And lots more vintage (click on the photo to go to the etsy page.) And yep, finally found a vintage dress form at an estate sale (yay!) and every time I come back into the living room, it scares the crap outta me. Every. Damn. Time.
