adventures in quirky style

Remember when I promised to stop the madness and not thrift shop until I fixed everything in "the sewing pile", wore everything in "the never worn pile", and posted everything in my etsy that's in "the etsy pile"... well I'm on my way! I've been sewing and fixing and suddenly got the urge to put on an amazing iTunes playlist and try them on! Obviously I won't keep and wear all these outfits as is, but these are seeds of outfits so to speak, to be tweaked and then worn when seasonally appropriate!

Without further ado, I give you dress up time...

So this is what happens when it snows like crazy, my client cancels due to said snow, and I sit around, sewing, rocking out, drinking a lot of tea, and playing! Stay tuned, I'm sure there will be a part two soon!

P.S. Yes, I am embarrassed that I own this many clothes. I'm working on it. I may have a really epic fashion garage sale this summer.

slow and steady

Hey! Remember the DIY of the Lizzie Fortunato necklace I started a few weeks ago? I finally finished it...

while drinking like three cups of tea at once! Spoiler alert!! -I think I'll wear it tomorrow!

Here is what I wore today! I seriously bought like five dresses that had one woman's name in the back one day at a thrift store. I hope it is because she was moving to a retirement home or gained weight and not because she died. I hacked like eight inches off the hem since it was a really awkward length. It appears to have been homemade, so thank you Eleanore D, whoever you are, you had great style! Thanks for the cheap dresses!

Dress - thrifted handmade vintage
Socks - thrifted (I know, I know!, they just don't make this electric red color anymore!)
Boots - thrifted Ann Taylor LOFT

Champagne wishes...

The other day the boy asked my why I kept dressing "bitchy and prissy", so I wore this pink ruffled blouse to annoy him. Ain't love grand?!? I found it at a thrift store with the Target tags from the 1980s still attached. I love it!
 Blazer - thrifted
Blouse - thrifted at Fake Target
Pants - cK
Shoes -vintage from etsy- VintageVogue

Sorry about the crazy color of today's picture. The flash kept making the super '70s synthetic fabric look all swirly on my boobs... not a good look. So here is a weird sans flash photo....
Top and skirt pair - thrifted vintage
Tights - crazy $2 outlet store
Shoes - I bought them in London when I was 16 (brand is worn off)

I didn't take a picture of what I wore yesterday, since I stayed in bed as long as possible then just grabbed the biggest, warmest cardigan I own and skinny jeans. I might have drank a little too much champagne at an Oscar party on Sunday night. Oops. For some reason, champagne gives me headaches like crazy! But, yay for Slumdog Millionaire, I'm very glad it won!

my secret!

Ok, not really a dirty little secret or anything juicy, just a little tidbit for you. When I get home from work, I have a little snack (usually string cheese or a peanut butter granola bar... or both!), watch a little Oprah, check a few blogs, then run on my treadmill or do yoga while watching Seinfeld, or whatever. Then I shower and call the boy. I usually will change into different clothes than I wore that day before hanging out with the boy. I "test" my outfits the night before I wear them for real. This way I can find out if there are any problems with fit or movement or just something I can tweak to make it more comfy or chic.

The brown cardi one is the outfit from last night. I decided the dress was too tight on the bottom, my boobs are too big for the cardigan to be worn like that, but didn't want to button it up and detract from the belts. Tweak, tweak, and here it what I actually wore today.

 Scarf - TJ Maxx
Dress - inherited from older sister (the Limited)
Belts - all thrifted
Tights - Target?
Boots - eBay $12!

I often don't have to do any tweaking or will just switch from flats with the boy to ridic heels for work. You can tell the days when I don't pick out an outfit the night before. These are the days I wear a t-shirt, cardigan, pants and five necklaces. Anyway, there is my secret, as boring as it is. Oooh, other secret... I have like five more belts in this color! I can't help it! It's my favorite color of leather... so buttery, orangey, carmely brown! Belts are SO cheap at thrift stores (usually $1-2) and I just love nice old worn in leather. The dress was inherited from my sister (from The Limited), scarf is from TJ Maxx and the boots were $12 on eBay last year! Bye girlies!

Ooh, and P.S. I just booked a flight to Boston for my spring break. My friend Megan is there with my friend John (they're engaged, I'm the maid of honor, they are getting married on a Caribbean island in November, my first cruise!). John is in Harvard business school and is the most amazing person I know and I'm so excited to see them both again! Any advice for things to do/see/shop/eat around Boston? I helped them move out there last summer (me and Megan driving a giant moving van cross the country in August.. what an adventure! John is legally blind so he flew out there and met us.) I saw a little of the city then but they were new there too, so weren't much help! They did say we may go on a trip to "the cape" for a few days this time! Yay, mini-vacation!

stop the madness!

Oops! I realized I never posted my attempt at wearing red for Valentine's Day. Here it is! Sorry, don't own much red, will try to rectify that in the near future. I love this shirt however, as it makes me look like I have a torso! I know, a lot of people whine because they are all torso... I am the opposite. My pelvis and my ribcage are like an inch away from touching. I don't mind I guess cause that means I have long legs (well long legs for being five foot three inches tall!). People are always amazed at how far back the driver's seat in my car is and then explain how I have no torso and long arms and legs. They don't believe me and then I stand next to another girl (luckily every girl I know is about my height) and they are amazed. I'll post a pic one day of me and some girls and you will marvel at my lack of torso. This is why I don't wear '50s style dresses... no waist. Anyway, I'm getting distracted here...

Tank - little boys Fruit of the Loom
Shirt - thrifted at Fake Target
Skirt - Free People
Shoes - nicole (inherited from a friend who wore them to a wedding and vowed to never wear them again)

Today I wore this rather awesome frock that I also thrifted at Fake Target on Monday. Hello $4 gold knit dress!
Blazer - thrifted from little boy's section
Dress - thrifted at Fake Target
Bracelet - thrifted children's belt, wrapped around four times
Tights - thrifted at Fake Target
Shoes - thrifted Bakers
WHOO! 100% thrifted for once!

Ok, so I know at the beginning of 2009 every blogger and her mom was making a no-shopping promise. Well, I have a guaranteed job and for the first time in my life, a little bit of spending money. So I did not make such a vow. However, while putting stuff on my etsy and doing laundry and sewing, I started a pile on this giant blue thrifted trunk that I have at the end of my bed. It is all thrifted stuff I have not worn that is ready to be worn. There is also a pile on my desk chair of thrifted stuff that needs to be repaired, cut and hemmed, buttons replaced, etc. My shopping vow is this... I will not thrift shop for my etsy until I post everything I have at my house for the store in the store. I will not thrift shop for myself until I wear everything I have piled on the trunk AND piled in the sew pile (exceptions made for some sundresses and sandals that can't be busted out until Minneapolis decides to defrost). Anything I don't like on me, or don't LOVE, will go in the etsy. That's it. It will be hard, when I hear "the calling" (term stolen from Kingdom of Style, it's the word the queens use when they feel the urgent desire to thrift NOW.)

So, many thrifted items to be sewn tonight (I actually finished two last night!) and probably many strange outfits featuring the thrifted things I've been putting off attempting to style in a manageable way. Wish me luck!

Help!

In case you haven't heard enough about the glory that is Fake Target, they had a half off sale today. I found a lot of good stuff in the upstairs, which is just a regular thrift store and I'll post with some of my finds as soon as it gets decent out (I bought a lot of vintage sundresses). Downstairs (with all the Target SAMPLES and whatnot) was also half off. I got a few skirts, a few dresses, a scarf, two pairs of $1 sunglasses and THIS VEST. Now, it has no labels, no tags, no ANYTHING! (A lot of the samples will have description tags attached - for example it would say: Isaac Mizrahi for Target, spring 2009, size 4, SAMPLE-NOT FOR RETAIL SALE) Has anyone seen this vest at Target before? Is it from one of the GO International collections?

I mean, it's clearly a vest version of the Balmain jacket...

I'm just stumped by it... Target usually leaves the blatant designer rip-offs to Forever 21. Sometimes there are SAMPLES downstairs from companies that Target doesn't wind up picking up and stocking in the store... so maybe that's what this is? Ahhh! It's making me crazy. The mystery!!! Whatever and wherever and whyever it exists, I am happy I got it for $3 and that it fits.

P.S. The white shirt under it is a Thakoon for Target SAMPLE and was $2!!

pardon me, do you have any grey poupon?

Ok, wrong color for grey poupon but whatevs, more mustard wardrobe. Note the long necklace worn across one shoulder. I am starting a trend, and it better be named after me, as in "Ugh, I am so sick of everyone and their mom wearing their necklace Christine-style." Sounds good, no?

Cardigan - thrifted at Fake Target
T-shirt - thrifted at Fake Target
Lace tank - Target
Bracelet - World Market
Necklace - thrifted
Pants - the first and last time I went to UO (visiting friend in Madison while I was in HS)
Shoes - Exchange by Charles David

Shoe close-up because these shoes are awesome! I found them at a crazy outlet warehouse. They're Exchange by Charles David and they were $25 (they're usually like $100?). I love them. They make my feet want to die. Thus I don't wear them often.

I don't have my client tonight, so I will be going to the Museum of Russian Art with the boy. He loves Russia and he's an artist. Perfect! Can you tell I've had like nine cups of coffee? I'm all over the place! Also, upon perusing my wardrobe remix thumbnails, I realized that I wear a lot of yellow, blue, orange and basics (grey, brown, black, white). I never wear red. or pink. Tomorrow, I will attempt to wear most if not all red and pink (Valentine's day at my school = lots of kids buzzing on candy, middle school girls crying. Not excited about it.) Laterz!

P.S. Has my foot tattoo been seen on this blog before? I don't remember. If not, they are five ants (NOT spiders!) and I've had it for 6.5 years. I love them.

some worthless advice

Do not wear this skirt to Home Depot... as a girl, going to Home Depot is hard enough, but accidentally wear a wood grain skirt in there, and you are in trouble.

T-shirt - Bitten by SJP
Belt - thrifted at Fake Target
Skirt - thrifted at Fake Target
Tights - thrifted at Fake Target
Bracelet - thrifted child's belt, wrapped around four times
Shoes - Madeline (DSW clearance)

Oooh and I have to throw in a "bracelet" close up... it's a thrifted child's belt in case you can't tell. I think it looks rather awesome.

Yay! Did my taxes! Will have extra money soon! Will try to be responsible and put it in savings but my impending spring break is tempting... vacation, mmmmmm. Up next... take on this hot mess in my closet!

Don't judge! 98% of these were either:
a.) thrifted and therefore $1-$5
b.) I have owned since high school, middle school, grade school?!?!
c.) were inherited from mom/sister/roommates
d.) gifts
e.) made by me

In other words, I own one decent necklace. I'm replacing this with various hooks that I have been collecting from thrift stores/home stores/wherever! All the earrings are going in "the earring drawer" which now exists in my closet, right above "the bracelet drawer."

Oh, P.S. Crafting preview! Can you guess what it is or will be(the previous photo doesn't give you a hint at all!) I'll post when it's done and it's not a big fat mess!
It's a total DIY/ripoff of the Live Long Summer Necklace by Lizzie Fortunato Jewels...
hmm, maybe I'll try to make her Hold On Me Necklace next?

Oh, and the real one costs 360 pounds, which is what, like $600?!?!? No thank you.

Mustard

I could wear mustard yellow and blue every day. My favorite color has always been green, but I don't know. I might have to go with mustard yellow for clothes at least. Mustard itself, however, is so gross. My dad always likes to tell the story about how when I was like two, I liked to take bites of his sandwich. One day there was mustard on it and I spit it out and started crying. He was cracking up and asked "What, you don't like mustard?" At that point my only words were "no" and "hot" and I was still crying and said "No mustard." I still find it revolting.

Scarf - TJ Maxx
T-shirt - Target
Dress - thrifted Patrick Robinson for Target
Skirt - thrifted
Boots - thrifted Colin Stuart

Today I am going to buckle down and do the two boring things that I have been putting off. Calling my mortgage company to see about getting a lower interest rate and doing my taxes (with my FIVE W-2s). They will be boring, but they are inevitable and will hopefully result in having a little more money. Boo on being a grown up.

 Cardigan - thrifted Old Navy
Necklace - belt from World Market (store closing clearance!)
T-shirt - Target
Skirt - thrifted at Fake Target
Tights - Target
Boots - eBay!

Oh my!

Want. Need. Must. Resist. Recession. Black. Ass. Kicking. Boots.

Timberland, I never thought I would succumb to your styles, but I gotta say - I really want these boots. We'll see how much dough I earn waitressing a fancy-pants dinner on Valentine's day instead of spending time with the boy. You may be mine boots, prepare yourselves.

meh

I'm feeling kind of blah today, but that usually doesn't last too long. Besides, I'm dressed like a nut today, so I should really perk up and play the part. I hate purple. Always have. From lavender to eggplant and everything in-between, I just don't like purple. I found this crazy soft velvet um, coat, cape, robe, thing at a thrift store. I decided to give it a whirl and if I hate it, I'll throw it on etsy. Sorry to anyone who loves purple (I'm lookin' at you, Prince), it's just not my cup of tea.

Velvet overcoat thingie - thrifted (again, no labels, no fabric tag, no identifiable anything to tell me when or where or why)
Dress - thrifted at Fake Target
Tights - ???
Boots - Casadei (ebay)
Yesterday was a much less crazy outfit. It was also a pretty boring day. On Wednesday I went on a cleaning bender at my house then went to the boy's house. It started out pretty innocently, I was just gonna quick wipe down his sink before I washed my hands. It turned into cleaning bender there too. If my arms don't rot off from cleaning that bathroom, I know I've got a superb immune system. His roommate sent me a lovely thank you, for my "heroic work in the bathroom." The boy's roommate is THE messiest gay man on earth. Really. Where's the stereotypical anal neatness?

 Dress/wrap thing - thrifted
Dress under it - thrifted at Fake Target (Converse)
Bird pin (holding wrap) - thrifted
Boots - Diba (DSW clearance)

On the upside, I started two sewing projects last night. I'll take some photos and give you progress updates. They're not too epic, but I'm excited about both of them. Project!

Oh, and P.S. for those of you who don't know, I'm a regular on wardrobe_remix and the lovely treesaw1973 told me the other day that I had very "quirky chic" style and it hit me... that is the perfect way to describe my style. I kind of incorporate things from all over and however I like, and it is always just, well, quirky. It's not too serious, it's sometimes whimsical, it's quirky chic! Yay, now I have a style (or a word to describe it!) It really made my day!

Oh goodness!

I don't know how I managed to get on the good graces of Winona (aka Daddy Likey) but she has tagged me!!!!! With a tag she made herself! Yay!!!! Exclamation points!!!!! (remember that episode of Seinfeld when Elaine got really mad about exclamation points? no?)

ANYWAY, here goes!
Show Us Your Blog Spot!

The rules:

1. Once you are tagged, post a picture of where you blog. This might mean a picture of your cozy bed, or your office at work (you naughty employee, you!), or a boring ol' desk like me. Feel free to be creative, but be honest--if your desk is usually covered in Ritz crackers and love letters to Rahm Emanuel, then show us!
2. Feel free to tell us a little about your space, or explain certain items in more detail. Or not.
3. Link back to this post. (I want to see how far this goes!)
4. Tag five other bloggers to show their blog spots.
5. If you are tagged and do not participate, you will become allergic to cabbage.

Ok, here is my desk. I blog here most of the time. I also sew here sometimes. Sometimes I pile and pile things onto that chair so that the desk is no longer visible. This is when I know it is time to attack the sewing pile. This is also when I subsequently have cute outfits to wear for two weeks straight.

Those pictures above the desk were taken by me and developed old skool, you know, involving heinous chemicals and dark, dark rooms. The two strips on the left are from when I used the money my parents put in my "senior year of college spring break fund" and volunteered in an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. I also forced local businesses to give me clothes and shoes for them. I then went to the DR with two maximum sized suitcases full of stuff for them and nothing for myself. I had a hard time coming back into the US with two giant empty suitcases. I know, my bleeding heart. The strip on the right are photos taken under a bridge by some abandoned railroad tracks. While there I came upon a pile of medical waste that was dumped in the snow. While taking the picture, I was yelled at and then chased by a crazy homeless woman. Apparently she thought I worked for the government and came to bust her for stealing the garbage, looking for needles and pills. The picture did not turn out. I am still bummed.

I sometimes blog at work. Perhaps I will take a picture of it tomorrow... in the mean time picture a PC, circa 1999 on a generic desk. Picture two vinyl cots in the background and every other stereotype about a school nurse's office. I'm there, blogging about my cute outfit from that morning, with puke on my boots.

Speaking of which, here is an outfit preview for you! I had to figure out how to wear this amazing thrifted jacket. It's just cuts me at an odd point and had to try on like eight skirts, and three pairs of pants, at which point I decided to wear my big wool shorts. I will freeze a bit when I am outside, but whatevs. I'm done with this below zero nonsense. I'm just gonna act like it's bearable outside. So here is what I will look like tomorrow, but with better hair tomorrow... then more puke on my boots.

Jacket - thrifted
T-shirt - Target
Shorts - thrifted at Fake Target
Tights - TJ Maxx
Boots - Diba (DSW clearance)

P.S. oops... I tag

Megan from See Meg Shop
